Scanner is a device which captures and displays images taken from posters, pages of magazines or photographic prints. Scanner in various types such as feed in, hand-held and flat-beds to scan color or black and white only. In modern day scanner a charge-Couple Device (CCD) or a Contact Image Sensor (CIS) is used as image sensor. But in old scanner a photo multiplier is used as image sensors. Rotary scanner is a drum scanner that is used to scan high-speed documents with the help of CCD array. There are some other kinds of scanners as well such as planetary scanner which takes photographs of books and documents and 3D scanners that produce 3D model of an object.

Another kind of scanner is digital camera scanner which is designed on the thought of reprographic camera. In spite of lacking some features such as shadow, distortion, reflection which of a scanner, digital camera has become quite popular theses days because of its portability, gentle digitizing and speed. To compete with digital camera modern day scanner also has the combination of both digital camera and 3D scanner.
