How would you feel when you will get free Wi-Fi as your prize in a competition? You will definitely fly high. The same thing happened in UK’s southern Cornwall to Orkney Island. 46 communities living there were chosen to receive free Wi-Fi for minimum three years as a prize.
The best part is that toddler and mother groups, unemployment centers and youth clubs emerged as the winners of the competition. This competition was banged by Freerunner, the famous Wi-Fi hotspot firm. It uses combination of satellite, 3G and broadband to connect to these remote communities at a single click.
These connections will be paid by corporate sponsorship and by combination of advertisements. The largest numbers of winners were from rural town Stromness in Orkney. The dock is a gathering point for both tourists and locals, thus Wi-Fi will help them to pursue their daily activities. .
According to the executives of Freerunner, their mission is to give everyone free access of fast Wi-Fi even if you are in suburbs. It’s incredible to think that such a low cost technology can help 50 communities across UK.
The Wi-Fi connection will help many people in these areas who have never been online and has very little knowledge about IT. They can run courses which will improve the employment prospect through Wi-Fi across the region.
The UK government has assured to provide broadband which will run at a minimum speed of 2Mbps in all homes by 2012. Surely it’s a praiseworthy move and let’s hope that Wi- Fi steals the show.
